Floor lamps are a great way to add some height, texture, style, and yeah, light to a room! A floor lamp can really improve the functionality of a space and adding light will make a smaller space feel larger so it makes sense to make room for the right floor lamp. Floor lamps also add interest instead of, or in addition to, a matching set of table lamps. Plus, they do not require a table so work well in a smaller space at the end of a couch or next to a reading chair in the bedroom.
Floor lamps should generally be 6-7’ tall in an average room with 8-10’ ceilings. If you have a smaller space or just want the lamp to blend in, look for a tree or console lamp. If you have a larger space and want the light to be the star, feel free to go big with a tri-pod or arc lamp.
Basic Types of Floor Lamps
Task floor lamp – have a shade that is pointed down that would help illuminate a space for someone who is sitting down reading, working on a craft, or other projects that needs light to function.
Console lamp – the most common type of floor lamp but no reason that they need to be boring!
Tripod – these have three legs and generally take more floor space so make sure that you have the room. As they are often taller than other lamps they do a good job of illuminating a larger area. These are a bit overrepresented below because they are HOT right now but they have a timeless silhouette and work with most types of decor.
Arc Lamp – bring drama into a space with their long arching neck. Great for spaces with higher ceilings and work particularly well for spaces with large sectionals.
You can find any of these types of lights no matter your budget. As always, my focus is on more affordable lamps with prices starting under $100 because there are so many great options. I did include a couple of splurges just in case you see something that you absolutely must have – I am feeling a bit that way about the second from last but will need to wait for a birthday or some other gifting occasion. My favorite sources for floor lamps are Target, West Elm, CB2, Shades of Light, Wayfair, and Lamps Plus.
