Space Jam – Creating Theme Kids Rooms

Source: Crate and Barrel

One of the many things I love about fall is when kids go back to school and parents start posting cute pictures with the signs that have things like age, favorite animal, and what I want to be when I grow up. One of my friend’s 4-year-old daughter has been consistent for a couple of years now that she wants to be an astronaut. We decided to update her room with a space theme so she is surrounded by inspiration and can go to bed dreaming of space every day.

Themed kids rooms are fun and frankly the only time I recommend using themes in design other than general styles such as modern, mid-century, traditional, etc. Here are a few tips to get you started and some pictures for inspiration followed by a more detailed shopping guide in case you also have a budding astronaut.

  1. Pick a theme – choose something your child is interested in and let your kid pick from various options; bedding, rugs, art, wallpaper so that they are part of the process. Think about you can add interactive experiences related to the theme – for example, for the space room we are adding lots of related books, a telescope, and a model of the planets.
  1. Bring on the color – Pick one item that will be your inspiration for the color palette and then stick with around 3 colors and mix in solids and textures through accessories such as pillows, rugs, accessories.
  1. Neutral furniture – I shared some kids’ beds HERE that you may want to consider but many of the “fun” options will not last beyond the childhood years. A good way to manage the budget is to purchase a bed, nightstand, and dresser that will transition into the pre-teen years by just changing out the rug, artwork, and bedding.
