My new house is a soft contemporary design with all of the walls painted a very light grey and the color pallet is mostly black and white. While I love this fresh look, I feel that the house is missing a bit of color and the powder room will be the easiest place to add some since it is not part of the open-plan (obviously) and it is a small space so will keep the cost down.
In my Redmond house, I installed a peel and stick wallpaper in the powder room in a birch tree design which I loved. While peel and stick is great for a novice, it came with some challenges – namely the paper I installed in the laundry room all fell down overnight because the walls were textured so warning to avoid this if your walls are textured. While the bathroom was also textured, the different paper seemed to stick better in there and I used some spray adhesive to stick up some that was not adhering great.
The new powder room has a very large mirror on one wall so I am thinking about just installing paper on the opposite wall which will reflect in the mirror. Initially, I wanted to install the famous Chiang Mai wallpaper, a Schumacher design, and not surprisingly, probably the most expensive wallpaper. Just to paper the one wall, I estimated the cost at around $1400! This is well outside the norm so for this reason, and because Mike hated it, I am looking for a different option that will likely be less than $300 even for premium wallpaper.
Below are the current wallpaper candidates. I was not intentionally looking for bird wallpaper but it definitely emerged as a theme. This time I am going to use a professional to install given the small space and likelihood that the selected paper will be the traditional pasted style.
Please reply in the comments and let me know which is your favorite. Looking forward to providing an update on the final install!
Are you thinking about adding a similar splash of color somewhere? Below are a few of my favorite wallpaper resources. Please let me know if you want some help with the final choice!
Stephanie, I love everything about what you are doing! And wallpaper is all the rage! 5 & 6 are my favorite! With a mirror that big I‘m leanI got towards #5 but all your choices are beautiful!
thanks – those choices are definitely like you – beautiful and elegant!
Hi, Stephanie
How exciting for you to be doing something you love!! Ok my choices in order
3,6,7
I am scared to death of birds so I just can’t pick those, but they are very nice. Lol
haha forgot about that – definitely limited your choices!
Wallpaper instantly makes a space feel more unique and creative. I don’t have an outright favorite for the space because for me it would really depend on the style choices in the rest of the house. Here are my top picks. I’d go with 2 if you tend toward classic looks with a side of contemporary, artsy flair. 7 is pure fun and playful. 9 is laid back with a slightly vintage feel. Can’t wait to see what you choose. 😊
the rest of the house is very neutral with black and white primarily (see portfolio) and little pattern. definitely stepping outside the bounds with this choice! Love your recommendations and thought process.
So cool! I vote 5 or 9 😀 🦢
thanks for the input – interesting choices with probably the most neutral and one of the most crazy – love it!
9 hands down!
Thanks, I love that one too but I think that my husband and son have put it out of the running. Stay tuned!
