I like to change up my décor for the holidays and the seasons. One of my recent purchases is really turning out to be a winner in this category and it is a simple bowl. This bowl was one of my first decorative purchases for the new house and I didn’t have any grand design plans at the time, I just knew it was something that caught my eye but I was a bit surprised by the size as 16″ diameter is bigger than you think – guess the 10+ pears in the bowl should have been a clue.
The large size ended up being great as it allows for more flexibility when filling it with wonderful holiday and seasonal accents. It all started with Halloween where I found some pumpkins in a modern color that worked from Halloween to Thanksgiving and then my Christmas color inspiration bulbs were up next.
Given the size of the bowl, I start with some crumpled packing paper on the bottom and then add some shredded decorative paper on top to hide the filler. This allows the decorations to sit at the top of the bowl without having to buy as many filler decorations.
Some other filler ideas I am thinking about for the rest of the year include:
Halloween – pumpkins, spiders, skulls
Christmas – ornaments, cranberries, pinecones and evergreens, Christmas cards
Easter – artificial eggs, artificial grass, and a bunny
4th of July – red, white, and blue jumbo pearls
Fall – apples or pinecones
Winter – fake snowballs or snowflakes
Spring – flowering bulbs
Any season – orchids (very reasonable at Home Depot), mossy balls, succulents
Browsing Etsy and cruising the aisles at Target or hobby stores is sure to provide additional inspiration. This would be a great one to have the kids help select the filler and assemble.
Here are some bowls that would provide a great base for this design. As always, be sure to check the dimensions as you probably want something in the 12×12″ range for the larger items like ornaments and pumpkins or you could just scale back on the number.
