New counter stools are a great way to add a more modern look and can provide a great place for people to grab a quick meal or join someone in the kitchen without being underfoot. Below are a few tips to consider when shopping as well as 27 of my favorite options. Many of these are available in multiple colors so be sure to click away if there is a style you like.

Size

If your counter is 25-27” you want a counter-height stool that is generally 23-28” floor to seat. Anything 41-43” high you generally want to go with a bar-height stool.

Quantity

Measure your space, it is better to have fewer with the right amount than be packed in like sardines. At minimum, you should have 6” space between the edge of each stool.

Seat and back

I prefer an upholstered seat for comfort and generally, avoid backless stools which are way less comfortable but may make sense if you do not have much counter overhang. Make sure there is 6” space between barstools at minimum.

Cleanability

If you have young children, consider leather or faux leather which is easy to clean; however, most upholstered stools are polyester which is generally easy to wipe clean with lighter colors better because wiping darker colors can remove dye leaving spots. I would definitely avoid wicker as crumbs will find themselves wedged everywhere.
