While flush mount lights are great for bedrooms (see some options HERE), the master bedroom deserves a bit more drama associated with a chandelier if you have at least 10′ ceilings. A chandelier also adds style – think of it like bedroom jewelry unless you are like me in which case it can be the icing on the cake.
Full disclosure, you will not find any lights with crystals below as I tend to like more transitional, modern, or rustic styles that work in most homes. I am currently very obsessed with globe lights. Trust your gut and go with one that you love.
Before we get to the lights, a few thoughts on selection:
Finish.
Let’s address the elephant in the room: Brass is Back. I am shocked by how much I love brass after it being taboo for so many years. Brass is showing up everywhere from lighting to plumbing fixtures with the key being the modern design, a burnished finish, and a limited amount. I would only choose brass for the bedside table lamps or the master chandelier and not both – it mixes very well with black. Many of the lights below come in different finishes so click away if you want something different.
Size.
I like a larger fixture in the master bedroom and recommend a chandelier that is at least 22-inch in diameter for a 12-by-12 foot room. The base of the light should generally stay at least 7 feet from the floor but you can go a bit lower if the light is hanging over your bed since you do not need to worry about walking clearance that is unless you are jumping on the bed.
Layers of light.
The ceiling light should provide lighting for the whole room with accent lighting like lamps and sconces providing more targeted task lighting. I recommend a fixture with at least 3 bulbs and you may want to consider adding a dimmer which is a low-cost way to really control the amount of light.

$600+
Which is your favorite? My favorites are the first one in the <$300 category and the honeycomb and the black and gold ball light in the under $600 category.
I still love the fan in our master bedroom for its function and it is a reasonable sacrifice for nearly 365 days a year sunshine but I still wish I had one of these beauties. I will make up for it with a fantastic light in the dining room. To be continued…
