My favorite part of the Office addition is happening – landscaping. Well, I really love it all except the part where we had to tear out the wood floors after the flood, but what I really like about landscaping is that it is fast. Well, once you get to the planting part.
It all started when I found out that we were moving to CA. I started gardening about 15 years ago and I knew that my Washington garden (see HERE) was not going to work in California. So I started doing research on Zone 10 landscaping, losing myself on Pinterest (check out my landscaping board HERE), and buying books on succulents.
I instantly became infatuated with agaves! From there, my love morphed into all things succulent and drought-tolerant, somewhat for this benefit but mostly for how architectural the plants look.
Once we broke ground on the Office, the real planning began and this is where I started taking my dreams and making them a reality. Things went from this…
To this…
Then this happened!
Here is the list of plants we used primarily in case you live in Zone 10 and are interested. I shared pictures of most of these in my landscaping post HERE.
Foxtail agave – my obsession
Agave Parryi – a close 2nd obsession
Blue Glow Agave
Leucadendrum Gold
Aeonium Uribcum
Echeveria Pearl Von Nurnberg
Kalanchloe Flap Jacks
Leucospernum Tango and Gold
Pygmy Date Palm
King Palm
Bird of Paradise
Make sure you get out in your garden and have some fun before the end of summer. A great place to start is by adding some planters. I purchased the grey pots from Restoration Hardware but you can also find some great and affordable options at your local nurseries and even Home Depot where I got the medium white ceramic pots there for around $50 each! Make sure you avoid ceramic if you are in a region that freezes because they will crack – instead go with composite. My other favorites are the hanging planters (see first picture above) that I shared HERE.
Odin the dog and I love to visit the various local nurseries. Odin’s favorite is Home Depot where he is treated like a celebrity with all the oohs, ahhs, scritches, and treats. So grab your dog if you have one or even your kids and get out to your local nursery!
