Bedside Eye Candy – Plug in Sconces

The use of wall sconces for task lighting in bedrooms instead of bedside lamps has been catching my eye lately. Besides freeing up space on your nightstand, they also provide some great style, and you know I like a good light.

There is usually one big problem with bedroom sconces, most bedrooms are not wired for these. While you could add them, it generally requires an electrician who will cut up your sheetrock, and then you will need a painter to fix that and paint and I am not just talking about the area that got damaged, you will likely need to repaint the whole room because the color changes over time and you will be able to see the patch job. Although they do have a cord, most of it will be hidden behind your bedside table that now has more real estate available – win/win!

You will want to make sure the sconces are placed to provide enough light for comfortable reading. One way to determine the right height is to get into bed and get in your reading position. From there, measure a few inches above your shoulder. This is generally about 5’ from the floor if the bed is around 25” from the floor, but since bed heights vary, this may not always be the case. Ideally, you will also be able to easily reach the switch or adjust the light if the sconce is multi-directional from your bed. Play with this by employing an assistant to hold the light while you test. – this is much easier than installing multiple times!
