Well, this is what day 4 of construction looks like – there have been multiple crews here each day working on plant and cement removal, grading and of course adding the new outdoor bathroom – aka the porta potty. The new master bathroom we are adding will definitely be a big improvement.
The pre-demo area in the backyard is the square patch of grass at the end of the pool. Hard to believe that this is going to be a >500 sq/ft addition. The front demo involved removing the hedgets that blocked the front of the house from the street.
We went back and forth on whether to remove the hedges that were blocking the house from the street and creating a courtyard in the front. Ultimately, we decided to remove them because sometimes you just need to rip off the band-aid.
Although the front courtyard was cute, it is nice to see more of the house from the street as it felt like it needed to breathe a bit. One side of the office will have french doors where the temporary gate is above and it will add some nice street appeal as well.
I am really excited to put the landscaping back together and of course, have started a Pinterest board with some inspiration. I want it to be a low water garden with lots of succulents. I had the crew put these succulents in pots to save as I love them. More on this to come…
We already found our first cost overrun as the gas line for the pool heater is right where one of the footings needs to be. I have not seen the cost estimate on this yet and it means that we have not had our BBQ for a few weeks which is a popular way for us to cook.
It is incredible to see how much difference a few days and it is hard to believe that this space is going to add over 500 sq/feet to the house! If you missed it, you may want to check out this post on the office plans to see where things are hopefully headed.
I hope that the rest of the project continues to move along and we will be in the new space by May but I keep reminding myself that demo is the easy part and it is much harder to put the egg back together again.
