Just like adding a new lipstick to your makeup routine can provide a new look, a new table runner can also provide a great pick-me-up for your house. I was recently reminded of this when I purchased some fantastically bright table runners for my Cinco de Mayo décor and to my surprise received two for under $20 which I have been enjoying immensely. Below is some quick information about placement, size, and styling then on to the fun part – shopping!
Placement
Table runners are a great way to add some seasonal or holiday flair without breaking the bank and they do not need to be limited to the dining room. I especially like them on entry consoles or on top of the piano. Other options include on your dresser or even under the keyboard on your desk which is a great way to help make the continued work at home situation more interesting.

Size
I generally like the table runner to drape slightly (6-12”) off the end of the console table or dining table, especially if the surface is 6 feet or shorter, so it is important to check the size. Common lengths for runners are 72” (6 feet), 90” (7.5 feet), 108”(9 feet), 120” (10 feet) and if you need a specific size, ETSY can be your best friend with many custom options and sizes available since they are often made to order.

Styling
Table runners can look great with any style from traditional to farmhouse to modern and I have included lots of different styles in the shopping guide below so you can find something that matches your style. There are are also different options on how you can style a table runner.

Single runner lengthwise – this is the traditional format and if it ain’t broke, feel free to go with this approach. It is a great way to provide a foundation for a pretty centerpiece and provide a layer of color or texture for your room.
Along the table’s width – this allows you to purchase shorter runners which can substitute for placemats and provide a fun divider between place settings. I like this arrangement for dinner parties and less for everyday styling.

Crisscross – If you have a round table, it looks great to place matching runners in an “X” shape across the table, creating a visual center where you can place a centerpiece.
